Gaze of the Abyss

Gaze of The Abyss is a two player Horror themed co-op puzzle game developed by Team Perfect 10. In it players navigate a sunken ship to determine the fate of their uncle and retrieve his pocket watch. To do this one player controls the diver while the other controls a drone that serves as the camera. Players have to work together in order to navigate though the environment and avoid the horrors lurking in the dark.

I entered the project during week three of development along with five other members making the total team size 10. I joined as the narrative designer with and understanding that i would also aid in the systems/level design(because of the small team size). The project had a base narrative at this point but it needed to be fleshed out more and implemented into the game.

The first thing I did after joining was to mock up a sample narrative. This focused fleshing out the preexisting plot and was meant to keep art and level design consistent with the world.

After presenting my plot to the team they found the main body of the narrative to be satisfying but had hang ups on the ending. I had initially planned for the ship to explode or fall into a trench giving a clear and satisfying ending. However many in the team felt as though this ending did not fit with the atmospheric horror elements that we were trying to provide. In addition the artists of my team worried about the possibility of providing such an ending and making it look realistic. I agreed with my team and started drafting other endings.
